Okay, folks are asking...Have you given up? Have you failed? Yes...until yesterday. I sucessfully dieted yesterday. And so far so good today. But that's really nothing special, significant or memorable. I'll talk to you again if I make it four days. That's the beginning of a positive accomplishment.
I did (against my better judgement) allow others to offer dietary suggestions to me. It was not a good idea. Oh, the ideas were all good. And one in particular was a wonderful plan of lifelong change. But psychologically I cannot listen to other ideas, alternate plans, improved plans, more scientifically proven plans or easier plans. I've chosen my plan! After I succeed, I'll listen to all the advice in the world regarding "keeping it off." But for now, just watch and witness "the plan" that I have selected. Gotta be that way. And yes, for a week or two the plan is very difficult. But then it becomes shockingly easy, as your body more or less says, "Okay, so you're changing things. I'll change with you." And after the weight is lost, there is no great overwhelming desire to pig out. At least that's not the message your body is giving. But there's a still a battle to be fought with returning to the same bad habits of old because you think, "Now I've lost it. I can EAT!" That's the problem. Again, it's psychological. After success, I need to develop permanent lifestyle changes. But for my particular personality, anything else is putting the cart before the horse. So here I go...again.

I'm still behind you! You can do it!
ReplyDeleteI just found all your blogs, and I just wanted to let you know that my Husband and I LOVE you, and of course your work. We started our diets yesturday, and so far we are doing good! We are going to keep checking your blog for updates, if we can do it so can you!!! Good luck!!!
ReplyDeleteP.S. We are so excited for Thorns of Glory...!
Chris, You have made the choice to follow your plan. Now you need the detail choices. In the church we are taught to make up our minds now what we are going to do when temptation comes. As we can all attest to, we will be tempted. It is not a matter of "if". It is when. By making our choice now we will be stronger to resist. Think of the diet as our life here on earth. We are being tested. We will have temptations. What choices will we make? You have been through enough to come up with scenarios when temptation of leaving the diet is hardest. Write down these scenarios and make a specific choice what are you going to do for each one. You can write it down in the blog. Then when the time comes and you are faced with "going out with friend X to my favorite restaurant" or another scenario you will know what you are going to do. It is the small and simple things like decisions up front that will give us the power to state, "Get thee hence, Satan!" Don't just share your decision with yourself. Share it with us and more importantly share your decision with our Father in Heaven. The Spirit can help bring your decision to your remembrance when the time comes. Say a prayer, in your heart if needs be, for strength to follow through with your decision.
ReplyDeleteWe are pulling for you. Don't give up. Keep the faith. Lastly keep smiling. Smiling will help you through the tough times.

Muchos Gracias, J Man. I have not given up!
ReplyDeleteGood luck, Chris. =)
ReplyDeleteDiet advice?? Newlywed.. 9 kids at home.. just moved.. and you want diet tips?? As a mother of a boy, wife of a husband.. and an avid reader of both...haha This has the feel of pre class reunion panic or something like that.. but.. whatever
ReplyDeleteSince this is November.. pre Thanksgiving I'll give you some pre holiday battle advice, and they don't call it the battle of the bulge for nothing. Keep this one thing in mind when ever you want to put something in your mouth.
The camera's are coming... and they add 10 pounds. if your lucky. get the most unflattering picture of yourself.. Bathing suit always works well.. Red hair... LDS... the whiter pastier the better... think April post Utah hibernation. I am a "CA" Mormon" so trust me the first spring break after a winter in utah and I just about passed out when I saw myself in a bathing suit. Visual motivation... very effective. Put that pic Blown UP everywhere you will be tempted to snack. On the fridge, in the car, on the chips, in the chips... whatever. Trust me... your will the cheat will disappear.
Oh.. and after the holidays and whatever has you thinking about life in the old jeans... Re-evaluate. If you still think it's a good idea. Repost.. after thinking about it... the why... no decision made in panic is a good one. And hey.. any man that is worried about whether he has a coupon for Thai food when there are so many other huge things to worry about ie new wife... 9 kids... etc..... and I don't buy it..get it.. buy it... Your buying shakes... they cost more than the earth... I know I still have a 15 year old can in the fruit room.
Oh.. yeah.. more advice.. this unsolicited...as a general rule..men are very cranky when dieting. Even under the best of circumstances. I almost killed my sweetheart when he attempted it. note.. attempt....Money does not buy happiness... but something shiny for you new wife in her stocking...I just keep thinking... 9 kids...dieting stressed out husband...maybe big and shiny...goes a long way to smoothing the road.. hahaha.
Gotcha.. sorry missed the last post... I too am a black and white thinker. No options. instant tips.... sugarless gum...feel like eating.. chew gum...if your plan allows it....air popped popcorn...here's the trick..get KOSHER SALT blue box on the bottom shelf usually...spray the popcorn with PAM lightly I mean barely while it's coming out of the air popper and is hot.... then lightly salt it....toss it... this is a great after thing too...Orville Redenbacker popcorn is really the best.... I have 200 lbs of it in food storage....
ReplyDeleteMoving on... problem with the whole shake thing no oral gratification from chewing.... humans need it to click off the hunger button.. Think crunchy.... ice.. veggies...gum sugarless candy.. cinnamon toothpicks. ( I knew a guy that quit smoking with those... after 40 years... almost impossible...) Wanna eat... stick something in your mouth that isn't going to break your diet and then do something else...
Figure out what you can have and eat it until your sick of it....then find something else... don't reinvent the wheel every day.. There is nothing wrong with eating the same thing over and over....KISS(keep it simple...)
Distract distract... distract....9 kids... your golden there...
Non food rewards.. shoes did it for me... whatever works for you.
Your a newlywed... figure that one out endorphins are a natural appetite suppressant... here 9 kids might be a disadvantage
I have tons of other things... I've done this since I was 5...stopped doing it 6 years ago.. Lost 150 lbs... kept most of it off going on 11 years now... No longer a member of the denim jumper crowd...
